CHAPTER 7

Always look for the man who protects those around him. He is the one who will be worthy of you.

Grandma Lucy's Rules to Magic and Dating

The orchestra had stopped playing music by the time they returned to the ballroom and people were arranging themselves to make the procession into the dinner. Gray stood close to her but hadn't held her hand since they had left the library. She missed the heat and connection. She also missed the feel of his lips moving against hers, but that wasn't going to happen again anytime soon either.

He winked at her, like he knew what she was thinking.

A man who looked a lot like Gray came rushing up to them. A brother maybe?

"Where were you?" The man's eyes darted over Cassy, widening slightly as if he knew who she was.

"Why?" Gray frowned at the new arrival.

"Our father." His whispered voice broke and his face paled. "He is insisting on an announcement and demanded that I find you. I…" His words trailed off.

Gray nodded sharply and his mouth flattened into a grim line, as if he knew exactly what his brother was trying to say and didn't like it one bit. "That is not going to happen."

"Lottie is distraught, but I don’t know how to help her. Or you," the man said furtively. He glanced at Cassy, like he wasn't sure he wanted all this aired in front of her, but the situation was too dire to do anything else.

Gray gripped his brother's shoulder tightly. His jaw was set, and his nostrils flared. Whatever was going on wasn't good. Had someone discovered their late-night activities? Because Cassy suspected this man had to be the third rider who'd accosted them on the road.

Then Gray narrowed his eyes at something over Cassy's shoulder. She glanced in that direction and saw Alice standing in the doorway. She looked completely adrift in a sea of strangers. Her eyes were red and swollen, like she'd been crying.

Cassy pushed her way toward Alice, who seemed relieved to see her approach. Although she looked less impressed when Gray followed her. She dragged Alice into a quiet corner of the hallway where they were partially shielded by a large potted plant.

"Please, go," she said to Gray. "Your brother needs you."

He shook his head and didn't leave. Gray scanned their surroundings, like he was assessing the area for threats. She found the whole thing oddly touching.

"What happened?" she asked Alice. "Are you hurt?"

"I have to leave," Alice sputtered. "I just can't… I can't stay here."

"Of course," Cassy said. She shot an apologetic look at Gray, hoping he understood. "Let's collect our cloaks and we'll ditch this joint."

"I will arrange for your carriage to be brought around," Gray said, then his gaze drifted upward.

Cassy looked up too. Her breath caught when she saw they were standing under one of those kissing balls. What in the world was it doing out here? Then Gray was stepping closer. He paused for a moment as their gazes caught.
